The main difference between shatter and other concentrates is the texture and appearance it looks like an amber-colored glass and resembles a candy texture. The difference in flavor and in harshness often comes from how much of the starting terpene content is left, along with how much other stuff like lipids made it into the extract. High vacuum is applied to pull solvent from the mixture, and eventually we are left with a supersaturated solution of THCa in terpenes and cannabinoids. Shatter is the opposite - it's purged without agitation, so that no nucleation sites are induced. Forcing the THCa to crystalize helps drive solvent from the mix without vacuum. Take your crumble to a magnifier or microscope, shine light on it and you'll see thousands of little facets reflecting back at you. ![]() The more sites, the more crystals, and the smaller each individual crystal is. So what you're seeing as a texture difference is a difference in the crystal structure of the resin: crumble and wax are whipped not to introduce air, but to induce nucleation, and form many sites for crystals to begin growing. ![]() This is opposite of most of the other cannabinoids, like CBD which will not crystalize in acid form, but will crystalize once heated to neutral, decarboxylated form. THC is produced by the plant as a carboxylic acid, and THC's physical properties are such that it crystalizes in acid form, but not in neutral, decarboxylated form.
